Welcome to Datapoint Remembered—The Book . . . The Reunion

The Book

Would you like to share what you experienced while working at Datapoint Corporation, in San Antonio, Texas? Remember that incredible, leading-edge company that had the best hardware around? The one-time darling of Wall Street?  The company that gave IBM a run for their money?  The company that had the wire?

I am compiling a book of people’s written memories . . . of their experiences while working at Datapoint, in San Antonio, Texas. Believe it, or not, Datapoint still exists, although they now focus on the call-centre market, with headquarters in UK.

I'll also include narratives of previous Intelogic Trace (IT) employees. IT, with Datapoint origins from 1985, was a computer-servicing organization employing over 2,000 people at one time.

What I’m most interested in is encouraging you to write a brief (two to five single-spaced pages, or longer) narrative about what you did at Datapoint and/or IT when you worked there, and about your Datapoint and/or IT experience(s). Whatever you feel like sharing, whether good, positive, indifferent, or not (but respectfully, please).

If you’d like to read someone else’s thoughts about her experiences at Datapoint/IT, to maybe help you get started, click here for a Sample Narrative.

I want to do this book before any more of us Datapoint/IT oldies get too old to remember . . . or too old to keep living. Much has already gone the way of the grim reaper. I have lost friends who worked at Datapoint/IT, who have passed on, without sharing their stories.  This information, your experiences, and everyone’s experiences that worked and created and designed, documented, and serviced technology at Datapoint/IT are important to the history of . . . well, this country! Maybe even the planet!

Some former Datapointers and ITers moved forward to create/design a large part of the wireless technology on the market, today. Wouldn’t you like to know who they are, and what they’re doing even now?

What will I do with this book?  This book will be edited for quality and made available for download purchase as an ebook, and also made available as a hard copy to purchase in bookstores.

What shall I do with any profits from this book?  If enough books sell:  a scholarship fund with local colleges and universities in the San Antonio area, in the field of computer engineering. Smaller profits will go to a local charity.

When is the deadline for submitting your narrative? Jun 1, 2008. I want to have everything in time for editing and getting it to the printer, so everyone might have a chance to purchase copies in time for Christmas.

Where do you send your narratives? Please forward your story (or ideas) to:  vicki@datapointremembered.com.  For questions, feel free to call me (Vicki Worthington) at 210-568-1552.  If you have some ideas you’d like to share for content or development of this book, even better!  And feel free to forward this web address to . . . others.

Important Note:   When e-mailing, please use Datapoint, or Datapoint Remembered, in the subject line, or your e-mail may be treated as SPAM.

Can you include a short bio of your recent accomplishments and/or work? Yes. If you wish to briefly mention where you are and how you might be spending your time now, please do. It must be brief, and please include this mention at the end of your narrative. Yes, you may include an email or web address (although I reserve the right to not include addresses for particular types of sites).

Who am I? If you don’t know me, check out my bio at www.thepencilworks.com. I used to be the editor of the Dataflash . . . Datapoint’s international customer-support magazine. I worked with Susan Hughes, Chief Editor of the Dataflash.
